Sada Ronger Prithibi Bengali Movie Review: A Gripping Tale of Helpless Widows

Srabanti Chatterjee's Powerful Performance Shines in this Mystery-Thriller

Vrindavan and Varanasi were once the only refuge for helpless Bengali widows. Regardless of age – whether young, adolescent, or middle-aged – when a woman became a "burden" on her family, her only destination was Vrindavan or Kashi.

In Kashi, there was even a house called "Mukti Bhavan" (House of Liberation) that served as the sole shelter for these destitute widows.

Writer Prafulla Roy had penned a novel based on "Mukti Bhavan," and a Bengali film was also made adapting that story.

However, that tale had an additional twist – it was believed that if a dying person breathed their last in Kashi, they would attain direct entry to heaven.

Director Raajhorshee De, in his new film 'Sada Ronger Prithibi', has portrayed not a path to heaven but a harrowing and inhumane tale of certain damnation centered around such a shelter for helpless Bengali widows.

Here, a deceitful man named Nigurananda operates nefarious activities under the guise of a sadhu.

Two sisters, Surma and Parma (Shivani and Bhavani, played by Srabanti Chatterjee), are involved in the trafficking of young widows.

Raajhorshee De's screenplay introduces an undercover police officer and a journalist to unravel this conspiracy.

Along with the intricate plot, the film also features a thrilling chase sequence through the famous Ghinji Gali of Kashi.

Commercially, the film incorporates elements like vulgar language from characters like Surma. Even Srabanti Chatterjee's character engages in sexually explicit dialogues.

However, Ritabrata Mukherjee's character of Bhavghure provides a touch of positivity.

Srabanti Chatterjee masterfully portrays the helplessness of both characters, showcasing her acting prowess in scenes expressing anguish.

Sauraseni Mitra, despite limited opportunities in Tollygunge, proves once again that Tollywood has yet to fully utilize her talents. Richa Sharma effortlessly portrays her nonchalance in her brief role.

Among the many new faces, Ananya Bandyopadhyay stands out. Arindam Sil convincingly portrays the duplicitous Nigurananda in saintly attire.

Raajhorshee De himself plays the role of an elderly sadhu and a restless lover without exaggeration. However, his earlier film "Abar Kanchanjangha" outshines 'Sada Ronger Prithibi.'
