Moon Moon Sen, also known as Moon Moon Sen, was born Srimati Sen on 28 March 1954 in Calcutta, now known as Kolkata.

She comes from a prestigious background, being the daughter of popular Bengali actress Suchitra Sen and Dibanath Sen.

Her father hailed from a wealthy family in Ballygunge Place, Kolkata, with ancestral ties to Dinanath Sen, who served as the Diwan of the Maharaja of Tripura.

Moon Moon Sen received her education at Loreto Convent in Shillong and Loreto House in Calcutta. 

She furthered her studies at Somerville College, Oxford, and obtained her master's degree in Comparative Literature from Jadavpur University, Calcutta.

As a child, she had the privilege of learning drawing from the renowned Indian artist, Jamini Roy, fostering her love for art and antiques.
